How Moxa Is Used In Chinese Medicine

Burning moxa over the skin is called moxibustion. Mugwort is the herb that is used in moxibustion. There are a variety of types of moxibustion.

There is smokeless moxa, there are also little bits of moxa that can be put on the end of the needle. Then there is regular moxa. It smokes a lot and smells like cannabis.

Moxa adds energy to the body in Chinese medicine. Blood flow is improved and it can be used to stimulate acupuncture points when you can’t use a needle. It is very good for back pain. I use moxa spray. The moxa spray has a variety of herbs in it, including mugwort and is very effective to relieve pain.

Moxa spray is used on the back and a heat lamp is used about a foot above the skin. I often add more moxa spray after about 10 minutes. Moxa is very effective to treat back pain. Moxa makes the acupuncture more effective.

There are contraindications to using moxa. If you are sensitive to smoke, have allergies, or hot flashes, moxa might not be right for you. Your back can be sticky after using the spray moxa.

Moxa can also be used on the tip of the acupuncture needle. The burning moxa heats the needle and it penetrates the skin. It can happen that the moxa falls off the needle onto the back. That’s why I don’t use this therapy It is very popular in China. The Chinese are used to moxa therapy and do not mind getting burned a little when they get therapy.

You could place a piece of cardboard underneath the burning moxa to protect it from falling on the back.

Breech babies are very easily turned using moxa on the little toe. There is as acupuncture point by the little toe called Bladder 67 which will actually turn the fetus in breech position.
