Well when I applied to BU last year my supplemental essay was 224 words.
And I was accepted.
The question that year was
"We would like to know, in 500 words or less, what experiences have led you to select your professional field and objective?"
And it said right in the supplement in 500 words or less.

I would be succinct and to the point. Schools like BU get tens of thousands of applications and the main criterion for acceptance is GPA and SAT score. They really barely have time to scan the essays. Also admissions counselors discount them anyway because they know someone else could have written them for you.
