How long does it take to lose muscle mass?

I’ve heard a thousand different answers to the age-old question. Everything from 4 days to 4 weeks to depending on the person.
Does anyone know the rough average it takes for someone to begin losing muscle mass?
Assuming you minimally work out, that is, i.e. a few push-ups here and there and walking, but no gym or anything serious

  1. if you are maintaining a high protein low fat diet then it takes a while (4-5 weeks i suppose)
    if you quit dieting it would only take a week or less to see any changes
