How Do You Overcome Indigestion? Here’s How

There is a health condition that affects a huge number of Americans which often flies under the radar. It is estimated by some people that anywhere up to 90 percent of Americans have previously suffered from or regularly suffer from indigestion. For this reason there are many cures for indigestion available.

Anyone who has not suffered from indigestion, and it seems that is not so many of us, might be wondering what all the fuss is about. Surely it’s not that big a deal?

1. Watch, and Record, What You Eat

Bad digestion is often a result of eating something that doesn’t agree with your digestive system. So become a sleuth and track down exactly what it is that doesn’t agree with you.

Keep a food diary. Update it every day with a summary of what you ate, and particularly importantly, indicate in your diary whether or not you suffered bad digestion that day.

After you’ve spent some time working on your diary go back through it and try and identify foods which you ate on days when you suffered. In particular look for foods which you ate on those days and only on those days.

There may be a few, but chances are that one or more of them could be the cause of the problem.

Then eliminate one of these foods from your diet, and see if it makes any difference. But only eliminate one at a time, any more and you confuse the issue.

Follow this process until you’ve tracked down one or more foods that cause the problem.

2. Eat More Carefully

In the past eating was a serious business, and a meal was a sitdown affair. Nowadays so many people eat on the run. They eat in the car, they eat on the bus or they eat at work. Or maybe they eat at home, but the next game is starting soon so they gobble it down.

Whilst chewing 30 times on every mouthful is overly tedious, the message is good. Eat slowly and carefully and don’t gobble. Try and return to the days when eating was a sitdown affair over which time was spent.

3. Cook Your Food

Eating raw foods is a bit of a fad nowadays, for various reasons. However raw vegetables in particular are more difficult to digest then when they are fully cooked.

That’s not to say you should cook your vegetables to within an inch of their life. Overcooked vegetables are dull and and uninteresting, and many of the nutrients are lost. It’s not necessary to cook your vegetables until they turn to mush in the saucepan, but it certainly helps to cook them.
