How Developing Fat Cells Threaten Weight Loss Over 40

When we attempt to lose weight over 40 all of us have the same problem: Fat accumulates very easily and it is harder to lose after 40 as well.

Storing fat used to be crucial for survival, and fat is a great storage medium for energy. Throughout history, we have relied on our body fat to endure numerous shortages and starvation periods.

Since our bodies do store fat so easily, it endangers our ability to achieve permanent weight loss. Let’s understand how fat cells work and why it is so hard for men and women over 40 to lose weight permanently.

Present fat cells fill up when your body takes in more energy than you spend. And it does not matter if you are eating fat or starch or sugar: All excess calories move into fat storage. After the present fat cells are full, your body grows new fat cells- a process without natural limitations.

Fat cushions increase even more when you are under stress, but the threat that poses the greatest risk to losing weight over 40 is: Present fat cells are lasting, and won’t be destroyed. It is impossible to reduce the number of fat cells that exist, but you can reduce the amount of fat stored in those cells.

If your fat cells are filled, they transmit a Neuropeptide to your brain called Leptin. As long as the Leptin level in your blood is high, your brain receives the message “no need to eat”. When your body’s fat cells become exhausted, the Leptin is gone – and you become hungry.

Let’s be responsible and face the truth: If you need to lose weight permanently over 40, you’ll have to live with a slight feeling of hunger most of the time. This challenges you emotionally, and that is why the psychological science behind permanent weight loss is stressed so highly – your mind needs ways to deal with this emotional challenge. Every weight loss program must include some psychological advice too or it won’t help you to lose weight permanently.

In addition the distribution of fat shifts with the years for women. For young women, it’s often on the hips and on the tights. Women over 40 will often acquire fat on the abdomen, and visceral belly fat is linked to a number of diseases.

Our bodies are governed by powerful regulation mechanisms. We tend to have the same weight, even though we do not eat the same amount of calories every day. Our bodies then counterbalance for these calories shifts, which leads to another problem for accomplishing permanent weight loss over 40:

If you are eating too much for a longer period of time, your body adapts to the new weight and will do it’s best to hold it. You will perpetually feel the need to “feed” the present fat cells. The longer you stay on starving diets, the more intense your hunger pangs can get.

Acquiring weight is very easy. Consuming only 100 calories per day in excess of what your body burns will lead to acquiring roughly 9 lbs (4.5 kg) per year. It’s very easy to consume an additional 100 calories. A can of Coca-Cola (12 fl oz) holds already 155 calories. A Kit Kat Wafer Bar has 218 and so on…

To get rid of these 9 lbs you would have to eat nothing for about 2 weeks. Or jog 51 hours, or walk 126 hours.
This all goes to prove that if you want to lose weight permanently after 40, small meals and snacks add up, so be mindful of what you eat.
