Hair Care for Dry Hair

There are different hair types including dry, normal and oily. Dry hair type is characterized by limited sebum, dry, non-shiny, fizzy hairs, dry scalp and the problem of dandruff. You may also find higher volume of hairs (thicker hairs) at the roots while lower volume of hairs (thinner hairs) at the ends. Dry hair is usually less elastic and its extendibility is lower than 25 percent.

There are many different causes of dry hairs and inheritance composed of less than 5 percent. Insufficient sebum secretion, dehydration of Keratin and heat damages (including perming and coloring of hairs) are common causes of dry hairs. Because your hairs are already dry and brittle, you should not wash your hairs too frequently like those having oily hairs. Once to twice a week is a recommended frequency for you.

You should not attempt to get more sebum secretion by not washing your hairs for a long time. Though sebum may accumulate on your scalp for a while, the accumulated sebum may then clog your follicles if they are not properly removed. Once your follicles are clogged, the sebum secretion will be stopped and your hairs will be even dryer than before.

Hair loss can be a big problem but it may not associate with dry hairs. In fact, hair loss problem is more common to oily hairs. For a normal growth rate of hairs, life span of hairs is around 3 year and there are 50 to 100 hairs lost every day. This hair loss is normal and is not related to inadequate hair treatment or nutrition. On the other hand, hairs grow at a speed of 0.32mm to 0.35mm per day.

UV radiations and heat cause damages to hairs as well. Similar to our face skin, it is important to protect our hairs against the damages by the sun. You may apply hair products that have UV protection every day and especially when you have outdoor activities. You should also avoid perming and coloring for your hairs as they process involve a great deal of heat damages to your hairs.

Finally, you need to supply your hairs with sufficient nutrition to keep them healthy. Necessary nutrients required by your hairs include protein, calcium, iron, zinc and magnesium. Soy beans, nuts and black sesames are good sources of nutrients for hairs. In addition, you should avoid taking too much salt in your diet.
