Extra Sugar Is A Likely Risk Factor For Heart Problems

There’s nothing like a sugary, sweet snack every now and then, but too many indulgences can increase your chances of developing heart disease as you age.

A recent study indicates that people who eat a large amount of sugar regularly are more likely to have increase risk factors for heart disease. This means they could have higher levels of triglycerides as well as lower levels of protective lipoproteins and HDL or good cholesterol.

In the study, 6,000 adults were asked questions about their diet. They were then grouped by cholesterol and sugar intake. Of the participants, about 16% of their average daily calories were from added sugar.

People in the study who at the most sugar were found to have an intake of 46 teaspoons daily. Those who ate the least amount of sugar had just three teaspoons a day.

To be healthy, doctors say women should eat only six teaspoons of sugar a day and nine teaspoons for men. The sugar mentioned refers to processed and additive sugars, not fruit and natural occurring sugars.

With the information learned from these studies, researchers are hoping to influence food companies to reduce or eliminate added sugars to their products to help prevent heart disease. Some states have gone as far as taxing soft drinks as a way to reduce the consumption of sugar in the hopes of preventing obesity and related diseases.

Some estimate that a half-cent sales tax on sugary soft drinks may reduce the amount of sugary beverages from being consumed from 50 gallons annually to just below 40 gallons.

Eating an excess of sugar has been shown to contribute to heart disease and other deadly health conditions like obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke. This study goes a long way in helping people see the effects added sugar has on their health.
