How to Deal With Guilt

Have you ever thought what it would be like to live a life freed from guilt without the haunting feeling of regret and remorse consistently lingering in the recesses of your intelligence? Guilt is a difficult problem for numerous folks and how to deal with guilt is a question asked by many.

Instead of ask how one can deal with their guilt, perhaps a better question would be “How do I get rid of my guilt?” if one actually needs to live life out from under its clutches. Dealing has the logical implication of “getting by” or surviving the situation. It does not resonate with sensations of liberation or liberty. It still implies one is under some sort of burden.

Losing guilt is possible , but not through any program, treatment or practice created by man. Guilt is the result of sin, which is doing, exclaiming or thinking anything that’s in contrast to what God would have us think. That’s not a legalistic approach to living, but rather selecting to live according to the principles set out in God’s Word, which ultimately leads to real joy, freedom and peace. Living opposite to His Word is sin, which results in guilt and therefore our feelings of guilt. It makes no difference whether one believes in God or not. In the book of Romans, chapter 1, we’re told we are designed with an inborn perception of God and His attributes and trying to “put a shroud over the truth” will not change it.

The worst thing about sin, which leads to guilt, is that’s separates us from God. That separation, if not revived, leads to spiritual death and separation from God forever. The good news , God longs for all damaged relations to be restored and has given a way for reconciliation. It takes place when one believes that God the Father sent His sinless Son, Jesus Christ, to die as a sacrifice for their sins and recognizes their need for that sacrifice. Through His death on the cross, Jesus Christ makes it possible for any who believe to receive God’s forgiveness of all of their sin, regardless of how great or small. God alone is able to pardon (officially release from any punishment i.e, eternal death) and excuse all who ask and believe. Once forgiven, we are no longer guilty for He forgives our sin and takes away the guilt of it. He does this due to His great love for us and His desire that we live forgiven and free from the guilt that incapacitates and weighs us down.

Does that suggest we cannot keep doing things that lead to guilt? Definitely not, but God tells us that when that happens “If we confess our sins, He is loyal and just to pardon us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” I John 1:9.

There’s no reason for guilt to weigh you down any longer, not when God, the only One with the power to excuse, is ready and waiting and eager to pardon you and set you free.
