Diet And Exercise Are Not Words To Dread

Elephants eat grass, leaves, twigs, bark, fruit and seed pods and still their weight is 7,000 to 13,000 pounds. Not a bad diet but they eat 5% of their bodyweight every day. Anything in excess is not a good thing. If a 200 pound human were to do that he or she would be eating 10 pounds of food a day with little or no exercise. The fat would be stored in the body for the little movement it took to get to the next feeding.

The point I’m trying to make is that although elephants have a good diet they were born eating machines with the genetics and metabolism that keeps them overweight. Genetics plays a part in humans. Some babies are born with more weight than others but it’s not an excuse. Weight can be controlled.

Eating a good breakfast is a good start. Many of us skip breakfast because we don’t have the time but it tells your body to slow down and store fat not knowing when it will be fed again. If you eat a good breakfast you will have more energy at your workplace and more fat burning metabolism. Your metabolism is your body saying; “ok – I have food and I’m happy – I can burn it off and increase energy”. More smaller meals throughout the day are better than three large meals for increasing metabolism. Watch what foods you eat as well; fried foods and fast food is not good for you. I like my boneless spare ribs from the chinese place but I left them sitting for a few hours one day and saw all the white fat solidified on the bottom of the container. That fat is what I was putting into my body. I also like to drink beer at night – just six beers before bed is like eating a few cheeseburgers before you go to bed. Think what that does to your body.

Now that we’ve covered the diet – let’s go into exercise. Many people haven’t exercised in years and it can be harmful and even fatal if you try now. Start slow. Walking is something we don’t do often enough and most of us only walk from our car to the grocery store. Try parking at the farthest parking spot from the grocery store – it will give you a little more exercise – it’s a start! Take the stairs instead of the elevator – you don’t have to run up and down the stairs like “Rocky” but slow and steady and it will help in the long run.

exercise doesn’t have to be unpleasant. Remember the things you liked to do? Swimming? I love to go swimming on a hot day – it’s so cool and refreshing and all the sounds of people having fun at the swimming area – swimming is exercise and burns fat with low impact and no sweat. How about walking? Walk to the bottom of the street even if it’s to get an ice cream cone as your reward – you would have deserved it. Find things you like to do. I like to ice skate – when I went to a professional rink a few years ago and actually met Oksana Baiul (true story) it was a thrill. I discovered the professional rink was much more fun than the lakes and ponds I skated on and I skated like a professional. Not only did I enjoy it – I was working my muscles ( which ached for a couple of days which is normal ) and burned fat. Oksana was there for a charity and I went there and paid a skating fee for a cause which I’m glad I did – I learned – mostly that exercise doesn’t have to be boring.

I think that may be one of the most important keys to diet and exercise. Do Not Be Bored. We eat out of boredom and sit in front of the tv out of boredom. Think of fun things to do and enjoy your life and your food.
