Did You Know That Your Computer Can Give You A Pain in the Neck?

Being a Bellevue chiropractor, and after seeing thousands of patients over the years, I have begun to see certain patterns in certain groups of patients. For instance, woman who wear high heels for many years have a VERY high likely hood they will have low back pain. Another one is people who have computer jobs all have very similar neck and back problems, and their necks all have a certain look to them. This has become so common in the city that I practice, Bellevue WA, because of the many computer jobs, that I have coined the term “Bellevue Neck”.

So why do these people with computer jobs all have similar looking necks? Sitting at a computer causes the head and neck to tip forward, and then jut forward. If you keep the head and neck in this posture for long enough it will get stuck there. This is a bad thing.

My post doctorate study’s are in chiropractic neurology through the Carrick Institute of Graduate Studies. In neurological text we call this bending “plasticity”. Now the good news is that “plasticity” goes both ways. In the negative, getting stuck out of position. In the positive, being able to make changes back to the correct position.

When I see postures of the neck where is jutting out in front of the body or where the shoulders are rolled forward, I diagnose this as “Bellevue Neck”. What this neck straightening does is put tension on the spinal cord, and stress on the whole body.

I work with patients on a daily basis who’s neck pain, mid back pain, headaches, tmj, and so on, are due to their “Bellevue Neck”. The key is to reverse the damages done and then prevent them from happening again. Chiropractic care is the best suited form of treatment for cases of Bellevue neck, and specific exercises are important to keep your spine in place.
