Choose Your Skin Whitening Products Extremely Carefully, Many Can Be Dangerous

Skin lightening is reasonably popular with many women for a range of reasons. Many women suffer from hyper pigmentation or skin discoloration or perhaps age spots or liver spots, or for some other reason wish to lighten the color of their skin.

For many reasons the production of melanin in the skin can become irregular or disrupted and can cause various colored marks, both on the face and on the rest of the body. This is unsightly, and for this reason there is a growing market for products which will reduce this effect of uneven pigmentation and give the face a more even colour.

However unfortunately skin whitening comes with risks. It is not easy to change the pigmentation of skin, and for this reason many products, both in the past as today, have contained a do contain ingredients which pose a range of risks to both skin and the health of the user.

In Victorian times it was even common to find arsenic in skin whitening products. However, despite the fact that that is now not so much the case there are still worrying ingredients in many bleaching creams. Hydroquinone is one of the most concerning.

Hydroquinone is effective at reducing the effects of melanin in the skin, and as melanin produces a darkish color anything that reduces the amount of melanin in the skin will also lighten the colour. The problem is that hydroquinone has been shown in studies to cause cancer. For this reason it has been banned in skin care products in many countries, but is still legal in others. If you buy a bleaching product over the Internet you may well find that it contains hydroquinone.

Mercury can also be found in some lightening products, as can steroids, and I’m sure you understand the health risks of steroids and mercury.

And it doesn’t stop there, there is in fact a range of chemical ingredients which can be found in various bleaching products, many of which are of particular concern for both your health and your skin. Cancer is only one of the concerns, others include the risk of thinning the dermal layer of your skin, causing symptoms much like serious acne, permanent skin discoloration and much more.

If you’re considering whitening your skin for any reason it’s something you should be very aware of. Nothing is worth getting cancer for.

In fact the problem is so serious that the FDA has issued a warning stating that “over-the-counter (OTC) skin bleaching drug products are not generally recognized as safe and effective”.

So if you’re particularly interested in lightening the color of your skin what options do you have? The good news is that there are completely safe natural ingredients which have been found to have an effect at reducing the amount of melanin in the skin and to do so completely safely.

One of these is a plant, and its effect on lightening the skin was discovered by pure accident. In studies to examine the effects of this plant on skin irritation it was observed that it also lightened the color of the skin, and this effect has now been put to good use in some excellent skin whitening products.

So if you’re in the market for a quality skin whitening product, choose with extreme care. There are risks involved that you may not have been aware of.
