Beginning Tae Kwon Do Omaha

There are a lot of benefits to practicing martial arts, including tae kwon do Omaha. This particular practice is Korean in origin, and the name means ‘to strike or break with foot’. It incorporates more kicks than some other methods of fighting, focusing on the power of the leg as a fighting tool.

As will all martial arts, there is a significant mental component to taekwondo. Depending on the school and individual instructor, this may be more or less emphasized, but all methods teach mind-body integration and the power of thought. More traditional schools will delve into energy flows and traditional beliefs, while sport schools will focus more on understanding your body as a unit.

The human body has much stronger legs than arms, and this may be complimentary to or the cause of the traditional Korean belief that arms were too valuable to sacrifice for use as weapons. Thus, taekwondo is very kicking-intensive, with minimal focus on grappling, punching and throwing, which are common in other martial arts.

One of only two Asian martial arts that are, taekwondo is sanctioned at the Olympic level. Beginning in 1988, it was a demonstration sport, and in 2000 it received full medal status. The other martial art to be included in the games from Asia is judo.

Physically and mentally, students can expect a workout from practicing this art. Stretching, strength training and aerobic conditioning are all required in order to perform satisfactorily. Some schools integrate their teachings with opportunities to do so, while others do more traditional exercises such as jogging and lifting, separated from the actual martial arts practice. Sparring and forms will be taught at every school, as well.

Students and teachers (if there is more than one) are ranked by their belt level. Color belts are given to students, and usually start with either a white belt or no belt. Five to seven colors usually make up the rank scale under the instructor level, and stripes are sometimes used as intermediate promotions. Black belts are given to instructors, but also have levels of progression– an instructor starts at the first dan (degree) and works their way up.

Tae kwon do Omaha is a popular sport and pastime. People of all ages and both genders enjoy the experience, and it is considered good for both body and mind.
