Beginners Running Schedule

Many individuals turn to running for help in losing weight and becoming more fit, stronger, and healthier. As a running instructor I am often turned to by new runners for help in learning how to start running. The basics of beginning a running program are simple, and below are some tips on how to get started.

Starting is the most arduous part. I began over a decade ago and I can still recall how strenuous it was to begin. The best way to start is by beginning slowly. By easing into a running program you can take on the task in small steps.

Starting out the best alternative is to do some kind of combination running and walking program. The beginning goal being to build up to be able to run for around three miles without stopping. This make a nice jumping off point for longer distances.

You can do this very easily. First you want to warm up by walking briskly, then, add in a minute or two of slow jogging, followed by another cycle of walking. You can repeat these running and walking cycles until you can comfortably run for 30 minutes without stopping.

Walking breaks can actually be very beneficial. Many runners are apprehensive to take walking breaks, but for the wrong reasons. Your weight loss efforts and total calorie burn will not be affected by walking. It will allow for removal of lactate and let your heart rate return to normal.

Work until you reach a point where you can run a few miles without resting. At this point you may find it very motivational to enter your first race. A 5K distance makes an extremely popular one for most first time runners as it’s short enough to train for easily but still provide the motivation and enjoyment of a race.

For new runners nutritional needs can become confusing. For most novices, it’s not necessary to increase caloric intake too far. Many new runners will actually find themselves gaining weight in the early stages of a running program by making this mistake.

Following a program to learn to run properly is a great way to learn to run consistently. The internet holds a wealth of information for those looking to really get into this healthy hobby.

Running effectively is running efficiently. Paying attention to good form and concentrating on a smooth and easy strike pattern with your foot will help you run faster and maintain higher energy levels at the end of a high mileage run.
