Basic Yoga- Learn the Exercises

Yoga is not just a sequence of exercises, poses or movements. It is a great system for physical, mental, emotional as well as spiritual health. However, the practice of basic yoga is actually an exploration of our selves. It is a science that provides a logical, step-by-step technique for a new understanding of our selves and of the universe. It’s basically a meditation in motion.

Basic yoga exercises could be classified in different forms. Each practical session begins with a few warm up exercises, whether an asana (intense or mild) or a pranayama practice. There are a lot of ‘loosening practices’ that could fall within the class of the jattis. The important considerations are that the movements are light, without causing unnecessary tension or strain, and that they systematically work through all the main joints and muscle groups of the body. Various jattis might be conducted in sitting, lying, or standing position.

The second basic yoga exercise is known as asanas. This yoga exercise has two major purposes. First, to be able to practice any real meditation, a person requires at least one asana in which one could be completely comfortable for a longer period of time. The second purpose is to bring health and energy to the body and mind through opening the nadis. When such movements are conducted, the path of hatha yoga is opened automatically.

Kriyas are practices of purification which deal with purifying the physical body, many with decongesting the energetic body. Such activities will stimulate more creative energy and pranic flow. Health will also accrue as the pathways of one’s dormant life energy are opened up. Another yoga exercise is the pranayama which involves fundamental breathing practices. These methods can provide great physiological and mental benefits and also serve to stabilize the body, cleanse and purify the physical structure. These yogic practices also help to improve health and endurance. They are essential for cleansing and purifying the respiratory system, bloodstream, and organs for toning up the nervous system.
