Acne – Separating The Truth From The Myth

When it comes to acne, there are a lot of misleading information. Thankfully, scientific research has dispelled a lot of these ‘acne myths’. Now, we pretty much know what causes and what doesn’t cause acne. Let’s take a look at some of the biggest of these acne myths.

Eating certain foods can cause acne.

This one has been around a long time yet is supported by exactly no scientific proof. There are people who experience outbreaks when they eat certain foods but still, this doesn’t apply to everyone. Eating pizza, chocolate, nuts, and greasy foods will not increase your acne.

If you have dirty skin, then you’ll have acne.

Although having clean skin has other benefits, dirt does not cause acne. Acne is formed under the surface of the skin and is due to build-ups of sebum and dead skin cells. Your follicles are not clogged because of dirt.

Acne will clear up if you wash your face all the time

This kind of relates to myth #3. Having clean skin is not the answer to preventing acne. Your condition could become worse if you overdo it by constantly washing your face. Further breakouts can be the cause of stripping your skin of oil.

Acne only occurs in teenagers.

Out of 20 teenagers, 9 may experience acne and 1 out of 4 adults may experience it also. Teenagers have a high incidence of acne because acne is connected with hormones, but hormonal changes is something adults go through as well at various times in their lives.

Stress causes acne

Scientific evidence shows that stress is not that large of a factor in acne. People mistakenly believed for many years that stress causes acne.

It’s possible to cure acne

A disease that can be permanently cured is how many people view acne. But that’s not true. Acne can be controlled and prevented through proper skin care, but it cannot be cured.
