A Guide To Removing The Steering Box So Gearbox Repairs Can Be Completed

Modern vehicles are equipped with power assisted steering modules that tend to wear out over time. Some of the required tools include a floor jack, jack stands, a drip pan, rags, an air powered gun with half inch connections and a set of half inch sockets. Also some specialty items which are required include a pitman arm remover, spanner wrench and snap ring pliers.

Additional tools required for the job include an air impact wrench and a set of half inch sockets. Power steering fluid is also needed to refill the unit after the repair job is completed. To begin, the person working with the vehicle needs to have some minor knowledge in mechanical repair in order to remove the unit. Before the unit is taken out for repair, the vehicle needs to be set on jack stands.

After lifting up the vehicle, the job can begin by removing the drag link and pitman arm assemblies. In order to do this, the cotter pin that connects them must be removed first and then the nut holding the pitman arm on the shaft is removed. To do this the removal tool is used by inserting it in between the arm and the drag link, then using a hammer tap the tool to separate the two.

The tension nut is removed next and is attached to the rag joint connector that is attached to the input shaft. The lines are the last item to be removed before taking out the mounting bolts and should be done with extreme care so they are not pinched or broken during removal. When the parts are disconnected and out of the way the retaining bolts are the only parts left.

The last part of the removal process includes the retaining bolts which hold the unit in place. There are a total of three bolts all together and are removed using the impact gun and the right sized socket. When pulling the unit out it is important to remember that it is quite heavy so taking care when lifting it is very important. After it has been repaired the installation process is done in complete reverse of the removal steps.

Performing gearbox repairs should be done by trained and seasonal professionals. If a person desires to learn how to do this type of work they can take a class at a community college. Alternatively they can purchase a used unit from a junk yard and practice on it in the privacy of their own home using online instructions.
