7 ideas for mild sleep apnea

Have you found that you have:

– incredibly loud snoring
– pauses during your snoring while you sleep

You could have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a medical condition where you pause your breathing for seconds – to minutes – while you sleep. Those pauses are called “apneas”, and can happen up to 30 times an hour.

1) Shed weight. Research has documented that the number of apneas lower with the number of pounds you lose.

2) Cut the amount of alcohol your drink – particularly five hours or so before bedtime.

3) Reduce the use of sleeping tablets, as they have been found to make sleep apnea worse.

4) Scale back your smoking – especially at night.

5) Get sufficient sleep, since shortage of sleep has been tied to sleep apnea.

6) Sleep on your side. Stitching a tennis ball to the back of your night shirt could help here. You might also try putting a large pillow against your back or sleeping on a couch.

It may appear that some of the above suggestions are contradictory. How can you get sufficient sleep if you’re sleeping in an unnatural position, and can not take sleeping tablets – or alcohol?
