10 Secrets To A More Meaningful Life

1. You might not realize it but you’re very blessed. Today go and make a list of all the things that you have. If you have shelter, enough food to last for the day, and decent clothes, then you’re already more prosperous than millions of people on this planet. Also, don’t just write material possessions, but think also about the relationships you have, and the good experiences that you can remember.

2. Feed your soul with good things. Choose to read the timeless classic books which have ennobled minds. Listen to soothing classical or ambient music. Listen to songs with good lyrics. And be careful about the movies and programs you watch on TV. Look for what is honorable, stay away from what is depressing.

3. Enjoy nature! When was the last time you went out for a nature trip? Go hiking on a mountain trail, or camping in a forest, or just lie down underneath the stars. Get away from the distractions of city living. See the magnificent beauty of the world.

4. Life is not all about work. Learn how to take breaks. A good rule is to always have a “sabbath” day of rest every week, where your goal is to just recharge your batteries and not do anything work related. However, the opposite is also true, if you have too much spare time, that can lead to overthinking and depression. Choose not to be idle and try to be a diligent worker. Find the balance between work and rest.

5. Use money to love other people, don’t get money for its own sake. Honestly, no one ever became happy from hoarding money. People become happy when they give, and when they buy gifts for people close to them. When was the last time you bought someone a gift?

6. Good food has always served to enhance relationships and friendships. Why not treat your friends out to a restaurant for no reason at all except to share good laughs? Try something you haven’t tasted before, like Indian or Nepali food. Spicy!

7. Treat your friends well. Don’t forget them and also don’t try to manipulate them. They say that the true friend is an extension of yourself, a real part of your heart. What you do to them you also do to yourself. Be genuinely concerned for their welfare, and be ready to sacrifice your time for them.

8. Love your family, they’re the only family you’ve got! One of the biggest secrets when it comes to family relationships is acceptance and forgiveness. If we all had more of these two things, then there would be less broken families in the world. Acceptance and forgiveness guarantees that the home becomes a safe refuge in this world, where you can always run to when life doesn’t treat you right, and always experience love.

9. If you’re married then be as faithful as you can possibly be. Resist the temptations to look for someone else. Remember your marriage vows. No epic journey was never without its rough times and near-breaking points. But those who work hard have the widest smiles in their late wedding anniversaries. If you’re not yet married to your girlfriend or boyfriend, ask yourself why not? Isn’t this the person you’d like to spend your whole life with?

10. Finally but most important of all, do your best to be right with God, your creator. We have only a few short years in this earth. A hundred generations have come and gone, lived and died, and our generation won’t be any different. Think about eternity. Read the Sacred Scriptures, like the gospel of John, which talk about the promise of an eternal and most joyful life.
