Why good oral hygiene is good for overall fitness

Just having visited the dentist today, oral cleanliness is top of mind for me. Firstly, no one enjoys going to the dentist (unless you have got a truly lovable dentist and even then it is not fun). The better care you take of your teeth and gums, the less number of visits you will need to make to the dentist, and the less time you may spend once there. But maybe just as importantly, there have been many studies that show that folks with unhealthy teeth and gums have raised rates of sickness and illness.

Why should this be? Well, if we think of it, gum illness means there’s bacteria in mouth twenty-four/7 that is being swallowed and taken thru your bowels and interior organs. This sustained flow of bacteria leads to soreness in the body as it tries to fight off all the germs. And when a body is in a constant state of swelling, it's an invitation for illnesses to come and flourish.

What can be done to keep your mouth healthy?

A consistent and healthy oral cleanliness programme can go a long way to keep your whole system healthy. If you follow these 4 steps twice each day, you’re sure to end up with a good set of choppers:

1. Step 1: Brush- this is plain, but you should brush 2 times a day for a minimum of Two MINUTES each time. Too many folk get tired at night and come to a decision to flop down on their pillows without having brushed their teeth before bed. This is a double whammy, and basically if you were going to choose one time of day to sweep, the evening would be better than the morning. At night when we sleep, our production of spit slows down so we don’t wake up in a slobering mess. But this reduced quantity of saliva means a dryer mouth. And a dryer mouth means there’s more of an opportunity for plaque and bacteria to proliferate. So if you don't brush at night, then you've an entire’s day worth of plaque build up on your teeth that is just going to like that dry environment till morning to multiply. And to pack a real punch, try utilising an electrical toothbrush such as Sonicare. It truly gets in there and removes all of the gunky buildup on your teeth.
2. Step 2- Dental floss: you've heard it a million times- dental floss is good for you. So why aren't you doing it? Once you get used to dental floss you will wonder how you ever lived without it. Even if you're the best toothbrusher in the world, you simply can’t get in between your teeth to get everything out. But dental floss can! There are cool kinds of organic dental dental floss out there- some made from silk and some with cranberry extract coating (made by Radius- www.radiustoothbrush.com). There are also woven and fabric flosses. I like OralB’s Ultrafloss as it is a little springy and grabs plaque better than waxed flosses.
3. Step 3- Tongue Scrape: this might be a little new to folks, but there are devices out there called tongue scrapers which do precisely what they sound like- they scrape your tongue. Using a tongue scraper packs an one 2 punch to germs and bacteria in your mouth. It’s very hard to comb all the way in the back of your tongue because we've got a gag reflex which essentially prevents it. That means that all of the bacteria back there can not be reached by brushing or flossing. But after you become used to a tongue scraper, you will be able to truly get to the back of your tongue and literally scrape out all of the junk that's hanging out back there. And do you know that most terrible breath or dog breath is actually caused by the bacteria on your tongue? That is the reason why people who've got bad breath can’t lose it by brushing. If folk are beginning to back away from you when you talk to them, run out and get a tongue scraper and you'll soon solve the problem.
4. Step 4- Mouthwash: the final step is by utilising mouthwash. I love it as a finishing step to wash everything down nice and minty clean. There are a lot of great organic and natural mouthwashes out there. I'm keen on the Natural Dentist with sage and PerioWash with cloves.

If you follow these four steps twice a day, you are certain to have healthy gums and shiny, clean teeth. While it may seem like plenty of steps, it can be done in under five minutes. And not only will it give you nice cosmetic results, but it is something that will make contributions to your general health. And 5 minutes of brushing sure is easier than an hour of cardio 🙂 Organic beauty doesn’t have to be hard.
