Which Other Skin Conditions Look Like Genital Herpes Symptoms in Men?

Diagnosing genital herpes symptoms in men by simply looking at them is easier said than done for most physicians. The disease’s symptoms often appear similar to those of several other sexually-transmitted diseases and skin conditions, and can vary greatly in severity from one sufferer to another. For example, whereas some men will develop a minor skin irritation (one that resembles any number of other skin conditions) during a breakout, others will exhibit the clusters of fluid-filled blisters commonly associated with the infection.

These genital herpes symptoms in men can resemble other sexually-transmitted diseases and skin conditions:

Emergence of Blisters

Without doubt, the symptom most-commonly associated with herpes in men is the formation of blisters on or around the genitals. Less known by the general public, however, is that this symptom is also seen in cases of Eczema, Impetigo, Syphilis, and yeast infection. Whereas the blisters associated with Eczema and Impetigo may appear in the genital region (although it’s uncommon), those blisters that form during the second stage of a Syphilis infection, and during a primary yeast infection definitely will. For this reason, genital herpes sores are sometimes mis-diagnosed as Syphilis or Candidiasis (yeast infection).

Ulcers and Sores

The sores and ulcers that form after herpes blisters rupture can, obviously, resemble those of the other aforementioned skin conditions which cause blisters. They can also, however, resemble symptoms of skin conditions such as Lichen Sclerosis, various allergic reactions, and even acne at various stages. In the case of Lichen Sclerosis, a painful skin irritation that causes inflammation and itching, scratching of the irritated tissue can produce leaking sores similar to herpes ulcers. Allergic rashes and acne, if scratched or otherwise picked at by the sufferer, can also produce an appearance similar to herpes symptoms in men.

Swollen, Reddened Patches of Skin

The appearance of reddened, irritated skin in the genital region can sometimes be the sole indication of a herpes outbreak, but it can just as easily be the symptom of anything else ranging from a different sexually-transmitted disease to poorly-fitted boxer shorts. This frustrately-ambigous symptom is also associated with Eczema, Lichen Sclerosis, Impetigo, Candidiasis and allergic reactions to various irritants.

While the content of this article undoubtedly provides food for thought to the man who is experiencing any of the symptoms described, it should also serve as an impetus toward seeking a consultation with a licensed physician. Only by accurately diagnosing the cause of your symptoms can you be sure to receive the proper treatment, and place yourself on the road back to good health.
