What You Need to Know About Back Massage Pressure Points

We all like to get massages but most of us are afraid to give them. People are usually afraid of hurting someone else. The fear of not helping enough is a big one. We’re scared that they won’t like what we are doing. Thankfully, it is absolutely possible to learn how to give a good massage every time you would like to do so. Here are some tips on how to give an amazing back massage.

The first thing that you have to do is make sure that the person is comfortable when he or she lies down. They need to be laying down on a surface that is both firm and soft. You don’t need a table but try having them lie down on the bed. If they are on your floor, put down a mat or some soft blankets or towels so that they will feel more comfortable. If the person wants to remain clothed (and most will), be sure that the shirt they are wearing is made of soft material so there won’t be as much friction or scraping.

Start out with some standard rubbing. Use the whole flat side of both hands to rub from the base of the back toward the neck (do this slowly). Apply some pressure into this but do not use full massage pressure just yet. Start out at the base of the back and then move your hands upward, along both sides of the spine toward the neck then move across the shoulders and work your way back down the back. As you keep on doing this, make your loops smaller and smaller so that you can be sure to cover the entire back.

Try to use the heels of your hands to create some good and direct pressure. Work the heels of your palms in little circles starting in the middle of the base of the back and then working out toward the sides and then upwards and back in until you’ve covered the entire back.

Sit at the side of the person receiving the massage. Then, having one hand on top of the other, push into the back using your fingers. Start at the spinal column and push steadily while moving your hands away from the spinal column and across the back then lightly slide your hands back across the back toward the backbone. Repeat the process as you work your way up the back and then repeat on the other side.

Work the spinal column. Start at the base of the spinal column and work up each of the sausage-y muscles on each side of the spine with a couple of fingers or your thumbs. Knead each node at least five times each so that you can build up a little bit of friction. Massage all the way up one side of the spine and then work up the other side.

Something that you must remember as you use each of these techniques is that it is a good idea to re-relax the person between each part of the massage that you give. This means that after you’re done with one technique, go back to the basic rub that you used at the beginning of the massage for a few minutes.
