What Makes Up Joyful Poems

These days, we learn of so much controversies, tragedies and disasters though the news where most of it are a challenging and dangerous. They can be read and heard in many mediums like newspapers, internet, TV, radio and even on our mobile phones. These events can suck out the joy in our lives and to regain it, reading about joyful poems can be helpful.

Poems are collated words that is used to express an idea or emotion, which uses metaphors, imagery, or sound patterns to send the message to the audiences. They are made up of verses rather than prose. It has many elements that contribute to the effectiveness and beauty of the literature such as rhythm, sound, line and stanza, voice, figure of speech, and many others.

One element, which is the form, is usually very flexible when it comes to modern poetry than previous ones and is less structured in the contemporary times. However, it is easily distinguishable from proses which because it still has the basic structure of its form and it is found in nearly all free verse. Even classic styles do not conform strictly to the standards so that can create emphasis and effects in their works.

Form has three main types such as descriptive, lyric and narrative poems, and there are many others like haiku, limericks, ballads, sonnets, free verse and many others. Line of words that are grouped together are called stanzas, which are divided by an empty line or a space and it is equivalent to paragraphs in essays. In standard form, stanzas have a uniform number of lines, though it is not necessarily followed.

The effect of a poem can be enhanced by using sound patterns, which is a complicated in itself. Some examples are rhyme, repetition, refrain, alliteration, resonance, consonance, onomatopoeia, and euphony. The most common and basic among them is rhyme in which the syllable at the tip of each line sounds alike or similar.

Rhythm is the pattern in which a poet chooses the sequence of stressed and unstressed syllables to create oral patterns. Meter or metric is the stressing of these syllables so when the reader reads it aloud it will not sound monotonous, but in different tones. Your voice rises and falls as if you are singing, which is sometimes in unconscious manner.

Using figures of speech when choosing words to compare various things, emotions and sense is called figurative language. Metaphor, simile, hyperbole, symbolism, allegory, personification and irony are some of these figures of speech. On one hand, imagery is the usage of detailed descriptions to convey a sensory experience in very lifelike and dramatic detail to create a specific mental image on the subject.

It can include vivid details on sensory experiences of touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste that is beyond normal description. The voice of the work refers to how it was presented to the audience as in first or third person. Although in many poems the poet is the one speaking, there are instances where the poet and the speaking character are not the same individual.

Tone refers to the way the author present his work in terms of the feel of the work or towards the subject. It can indicate a feeling of happiness, sadness, confusion, amusement, anger, and other emotions. As such, joyful poems can bring feeling of hope, love and happiness.
