Various process of team building

Experts all round the world believe that there are five different levels which teams do need to pass through in the process of team building. However it is to be noted that the amount of time that a team spends in each stage depends upon the teams and its members.

Bruce Tuckman calls these five stages as Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing and Transforming. Different people have stated these five stages as the main gates which every team must pass through in order to reach the goal however all gave the stages a name of their own. This is the sole reason that Thomas Quick calls these Searching, Defining, Identifying, Processing and Assimilating.

No matter what the name is, the stages are the same in everyone’s regard and these are quite simple as well. In the first stage members would be new to each other and would often work independently as they would not be free with each other. This is also a stage when they would be confused about the goals and their role in the team.

The second and the third stages are very important. In the second stage people would come to know of each other and there would be many conflicts among the team members. This may be because they would want to seek recognition in the team. However the team leader would have to ensure that everything falls into place. The third stage is where they would develop trust on each other. They would start working as a team for the first time.

The fourth stage is all about motivation, loyalty, participation and group decision making. They start respecting each other and think beyond themselves to help the team achieve the goal. The fifth stage may be the last in this but it is important in its own way. It is all about celebrating at having reached the goal. It is also about acknowledging the work done by team mates.

It is to be noted that team building is very important however it is not that easy. Time, proper effort and faith among team mates is one of the most important things that you must have. These are the things that you would need to pass through the tests and also be able to reach the goal. A team can never reach anywhere without going through all these stages.
